1-HOUR TOOLS: HAND & POWER

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This program’s goal is to introduce learners to a variety of power and hand tools widely used in the construction industry. Topics will include identifying different kinds of tools, safety procedures, and imperatives for each tool, and PPE required for various tools. THIS IS AN AWARENESS LEVEL TRAINING ONLY and does not provide any other qualification or authorization outside of the Site Safety Training Card.

Audience: Curriculum for any Supervisor employed in NYC within the Five Boroughs on projects requiring a Construction Super, Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Concrete Safety Manager, or Competent Person.

DOB Course Code: SST-111

This course does not provide an SST card. It does count toward the required 32 hours of training necessary to earn an SST card for Construction Super, Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, Concrete Safety Manager, or Competent Persons. 

NYC DOB REQUIREMENT:

1-HOUR TOOLS: HAND & POWER

Tools: Hand & Power class falls under “Site Safety Training (SST) General Electives” and will be accepted for use towards acquiring an SST Supervisor card; this DOB-approved SST General Elective course is designed for New York City construction workers seeking an SST Worker or Supervisor card under Local Law 196.

CEU REQUIREMENTS

  1. 100% attendance for hand and power tools course: 1 hour of instruction time

  2. Completion of Continuing Education and Training Registration Form

  3. Active participation in all class exercises (determined by course instructor)

  4. Completion of required pre-and post-quiz assessment

  5. As applicable, achievement of minimum passing score on required end-of-course examination

  6. Participation and submittal of end-of-course evaluation form (must provide name on form to receive credit)

  7. Make up time is not allowed. Students who miss time from any individual session must reschedule and attend the full training course.

PREREQUISITE: Participants need to be able to communicate with the instructor in the language the course is held in.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Define and differentiate the terms “hand tool” and “power tool”

  2. Identify silica-producing tools and apply best practices to limit dust

  3. Safely use abrasive, cutting, and powder-actuated tools

  4. Describe how workers and the public can be protected when various tools are in use

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

A plethora of methods will be used, such as auditory, visual and kinesthetic methods to ensure learning. This includes the program’s PowerPoint, related lectures, testing/quizzing, hands-on activities, and classroom discussions.
